I’m an Ultrarunner who dabbles in Obstacle Course Racing for a good dose of mud!

Boardshorts and Black was a name suggested by a mate (Tim) after Ring O’ Fire. Boardshorts shouldn’t need explaining but is, select ‘Why the Shorts?’ above. As for Black… After hearing a couple of mates (Bez and Dan) had drank Guinness at checkpoints during the Arc of Attrition I wanted to see if it worked for me. Tried a can half way through the Ring O’ Fire and hell it was like Asterix drinking the magic potion and now a can sits in my drop bag (if available) during Ultras! It didn’t however cure my ankle on the Hill, but took my mind off it for the final lap!

Why do I run?

1. Adventure! You can get almost anywhere on two feet with very little restriction hence running tends to be my common activity!

2. To clear my head! Whenever I fancy a break from life and chores, whether its run, cycle, swim… whatever, I like to get out and do something. Many say I’m much like an overactive puppy that constantly needs walking.

Who do I run with?

My running properly started in 2013 with Sweatshop Running Club (SRC), a great bunch of like minded people. Unfortunately the Sweatshop Running Shop closed in 2018 but the club continued under a new banner, Running Hoes. I like to join these guys as often as I can when I’m home from work. Monday nights 6.30pm.

For a period of time I ran for the Hydrographic Harriers, the UKHO (work) running club. Some more great people and my first official affiliation. I switched to MudCrew Trail Runners shortly after completing The Arc of Attrition in 2015 when I realised this long distance stuff was my thing… The adventure truly began!

I started the Facebook group ‘Plymouth Coastal Runners’ (PCR) in 2015 as a means of sharing my enjoyment of running on the coastal path in all weathers, day/night, with others. We have a monthly time trial, a few long group runs and aim to have at least one organised run a week.

When I moved to Dorset for a few years I was a member of Purbeck Runners and Square and Compass Trail Runners, both great clubs that I got to as often as I could. I’m now back in Plymouth trying to make PCR a regular thing, running with Running Hoes and Tamar Trail Runners when I can.

Where do I run?

The majority of my training is around Plymouth, around the town for road training and on and around the coast path for off road training. In all honesty I’ll run anywhere… always on the look out for the next adventure!
